Cone Feeders
The large silky dogwood outside my kitchen window provides convenient perches for the birds who come to the feeders hanging there. Now, instead of grabbing a sunflower seed and flying across the street to perch in the neighbor's bushes the chickadees crack open the seeds in the dogwood. This inspired me to put up some pine cone feeders. I already had a baggie of chopped up suet cake in my fridge (used to stuff the holes of the log feeders), so I added some peanut butter and worked it to a spreadable consistency. I packed the suet mix between the scales of some large cones I had. A string tied to the point of the cone allowed me to hang them from the branches point up so the suet wouldn't fall right out. The chickadees and titmice found them right away. The cones expand the feeding area into the dogwood and make for very fun images as the birds cling to the cones to extract the suet, seeds and peanuts crammed into the openings.
