I'm probably a few weeks behind, but I finally set up a seed starting rig. I saw a great idea in a recent magazine for rigging up a grow light with great adjustability. I mounted a shelf bracket system in the south facing window. The kind with upright rails and brackets that click in. One rail on each side of the window with long brackets. The light came with two short chains. I suspended the light from the brackets using S-hooks and the chain. Between the chains and the brackets it gives me nearly infinite adjustments.
I'm starting Jack-o-lantern pumpkins, mini pumpkins, bottle gourds, bushel gourds, mixed gourds and sweet and large leaf basil. The seeds for the bottle and bushel gourds are completely different from the pumpkin and mixed gourds. My plan is to mount trellises on the south facing side of the house and grow the vines there. They will shade the house in the summer and hold the fruit off the ground.
The recent rains and warmer temps have kick started all my plants. I've got some moving to do before things get too far advanced. With rain forecast for all this week until Friday, my goal is to get the most urgent stuff done tomorrow. My small natives are ready to go in their new beds as well.
